Standing water is one of the most common causes of NYC DOT sidewalk violations, particularly because it presents major slipping hazards during winter when the pooled water freezes. Stagnant puddles also degrade the underlying subbase, accelerating concrete cracking, scaling, and eventual collapse. To permanently fix chronic standing water issues, property owners must have their uneven or sunken sidewalk flags leveled or completely re-poured with a compliant pitch.
