Catch basin

Drainage & Water Management
Catch basin A curbside storm drain inlet containing a grated opening and an underground settling basin designed to capture rainwater and direct it into the municipal sewer system.

Catch basins are critical components of NYC's public stormwater infrastructure, usually situated at street corners. During sidewalk or curb reconstructions, contractors must ensure the pavement slopes perfectly toward these grates. If a sidewalk is poured incorrectly and blocks water from reaching the catch basin, it will create localized pooling, leading to dangerous winter ice patches and immediate DOT code violations.
