Reinforcement placement The positioning of steel rebar or welded wire mesh within the sidewalk formwork before concrete is poured to increase tensile strength.

Concrete is incredibly strong under compression but weak when pulled or bent (tension). Reinforcement placement prevents the concrete from cracking and separating when heavy delivery trucks ride over the sidewalk or when tree roots push up from below. NYC DOT requires steel reinforcement in all driveways and heavy-commercial sidewalk zones.
