Because this hardware is owned and maintained by the MTA rather than the adjacent property owner, a defect in the grating itself generally isn't the owner's repair responsibility, even though the surrounding sidewalk concrete still is. Sidewalks near subway gratings can also see faster wear from the additional structural load and heat exposure, which sometimes shows up as separate defects in the adjacent concrete. Sorting out which agency is responsible for which specific defect is worth doing before assuming a full repair scope near a subway entrance.
