Settling / settlement

Common Defects & Damage Types
Settling / settlement Settling, also called settlement, is the downward movement of concrete caused by compression or movement of the supporting soil or base. It commonly leads to uneven pavement.

Settlement often occurs when underlying soil was not adequately compacted or when erosion creates voids beneath the slab. As support is lost, the concrete may crack, sink, or separate from adjoining sections. Long-term repairs usually require correcting the underlying foundation in addition to replacing damaged pavement.
