Flared sides

Accessibility & ADA Compliance
Flared sides The sloped transition zones located on the lateral sides of a curb ramp, designed to prevent pedestrians from tripping as they cross the ramp sideways.

Also referred to as side flares, these angled sections connect the sloped center of a curb ramp to the adjacent flat sidewalk flags. In NYC, if the sidewalk landing at the top of the ramp is narrower than 4 feet, the flare sides must be sloped at a gentle ratio of 1:10 or flatter. Incorporating properly constructed flared sides is a critical design step that prevents sudden vertical drop-offs, ensuring a smooth transition for all foot traffic.
