A vaulted sidewalk is a sidewalk built over an underground space, typically a basement, storage room, or utility area, that extends beneath the public walkway. Instead of sitting on compacted soil like a regular sidewalk, it's supported by a concrete slab resting on structural walls, steel beams, or masonry below.

The surface is a reinforced concrete slab, usually poured at 4,000 PSI strength for load-bearing durability, supported underneath by steel beams, masonry piers, or structural walls that hold up the space below. Waterproofing membranes are installed between the slab and the vault to keep water out of the basement or storage area.
