Street trees are legally protected under the jurisdiction of the NYC Parks Department. While these trees provide shade and environmental benefits, their expanding roots are a leading cause of sidewalk cracking and buckling. Property owners are legally responsible for maintaining the safe, walkable condition of their sidewalks, but they are strictly prohibited from cutting, pruning, or disturbing a street tree or its root system without an official permit from the city.
