Public Design Commission

Historic & Landmark Sidewalk Preservation
Public Design Commission The NYC agency responsible for reviewing and approving the design of all permanent structures and distinctive paving on or over city-owned property.

While the LPC regulates privately owned landmarked properties and designated historic districts, the PDC has design jurisdiction over public land, parks, and municipal streetscapes. If a property owner proposes a non-standard sidewalk design, public plaza, or distinctive paving treatment that falls outside standard LPC boundaries, it must be approved by the PDC. Their review ensures that public sidewalks remain structurally safe, visually appealing, and harmonious with the city’s urban design plans.
