Horizontal gap or separation

Common Defects & Damage Types
Horizontal gap or separation A horizontal gap or separation is an opening between adjacent sidewalk slabs or pavement sections without a significant difference in height. The space may widen as the pavement moves over time.

Gaps can develop because of shrinkage, settlement, erosion, or movement caused by changing temperatures. Although some joints are intentionally constructed, unusually wide separations may allow water infiltration, collect debris, or contribute to pavement deterioration. Repairs depend on the cause and the condition of the surrounding concrete.
