Gaps can develop because of shrinkage, settlement, erosion, or movement caused by changing temperatures. Although some joints are intentionally constructed, unusually wide separations may allow water infiltration, collect debris, or contribute to pavement deterioration. Repairs depend on the cause and the condition of the surrounding concrete.
