Heaving

Common Defects & Damage Types
Heaving Heaving is the upward movement of concrete caused by forces beneath the pavement. It can raise slabs above their original elevation and create uneven walking surfaces.

Sidewalk heaving may result from expanding soil, growing tree roots, or seasonal frost action. As the slab lifts, adjoining pavement sections often become misaligned, increasing the risk of trips and falls. Repairing heaved concrete typically requires identifying and correcting the source of the upward movement.
