Concrete naturally shrinks and cracks as it cures. A groover is used to create neat, straight control joints every 5 feet, which is the standard spacing for NYC sidewalk flags. By scoring a line at least one-quarter of the slab's depth, the groover creates a weak plane where the concrete can safely crack out of sight. This keeps the sidewalk looking clean and organized, preventing random, jagged cracks that lead to DOT violations.
