Core drill

Tools & Equipment
Core drill A specialized drilling machine equipped with a hollow, cylindrical diamond-tipped bit used to extract physical concrete core samples or create clean openings for pipes and anchors.

In NYC sidewalk construction, core drills are primarily used for quality assurance and testing. If city engineers suspect a new sidewalk pour does not meet thickness or strength requirements, they will use a core drill to extract a physical cylinder of the hardened concrete. This sample is then tested in a certified laboratory to verify compliance. Core drills are also used to install metal parking meters, traffic signs, and structural posts through existing concrete slabs.
