A canopy permit covers the structure that shields pedestrians from falling debris and is generally reviewed by DOT's OCMC alongside a one-time Street Opening Permit for installing the support poles; the scaffold or shed itself also falls under DOB's construction codes, and suspended scaffolds require a licensed Special Rigger's supervision. These permits are common on buildings undergoing facade work, roof repair, or Local Law 11 inspections, where the sidewalk stays open but protected. Coordinating both agencies' requirements is one reason canopy jobs often take longer to permit than a standard sidewalk repair.
