Backfilling

Repair, Replacement & Construction Methods
Backfilling The process of replacing soil or gravel into the open trenches or gaps left along the edges of a newly completed sidewalk or curb.

Once the wooden concrete forms are removed, a dangerous gap is left between the new concrete flag and the adjacent lawn or dirt area. Backfilling this gap with clean soil or gravel is critical to eliminate trip hazards and support the edges of the new slab. Proper backfilling also prevents water from seeping under the fresh sidewalk and eroding the subbase.
